Technology is a vast and exciting field, with an ever-growing need for advancing employees. However, of the 57% of bachelor degrees earned by women as recently as 2016, a mere 19% of those were in Computer Technology or Information Sciences. With 3.5 million jobs in computing expected by 2026, it’s now more important than ever to get women working to fill some of those positions.
Charleston Women In Tech was founded in 2014 and has since grown to 1,600 members that have a common goal to encourage women to learn technology, create more diversity in the field and support women of all ages.
How can women earn more places in the male-dominated field of technology? Charleston Women in Tech hopes to change those numbers by offering free events for women of all ages in the Charleston area. The September CodeOn events will include many helpful resources to assist women in learning how to code, which is a valuable skill in today’s modern-day job market.
Every component of internet technology uses code - such as websites, software, applications, and operating systems. This valuable skill is crucial to growing businesses and our general way of life, as it serves as the building blocks for all technology.
These events will include such things as:
- Amazing mentors who offer free coding labs in underserved areas that will focus on WI-FI, computers, and tablets.
- A community environment for women to work side-by-side, and encourage each other as they navigate through a new field of study.
- A diverse group of individuals that have a primary goal to create more employment opportunities for women in technology.
- Several available dates to cater to different schedules and offer the opportunity of technological advancement to women in all walks of life.
