Do you live in an area with bad cell phone reception or is your phone always cutting in or out? Do you wish your cell service was more reliable, but you’re tied into a long-term contract? No worries! We'll teach you how to enable wifi calling from iPhone and Android devices.

WiFi Calling From Cell Phones

WiFi Calling is the perfect solution for poor cell phone reception if you’re home and connected to WiFi. When you enable WiFi Calling, it actually bypasses cell towers and lets your phone connect over the internet. It’s just like placing a regular call from your cell phone, and you don’t need a fancy app or to log in to a site.

Your cell carrier and the type of phone you have determines if you can use WiFi calling. You need to have a phone that’s HD Voice-enabled and have it activated. Most phones are by default set to “Data Only”, but you can manually enable Wifi Calling. See instructions below.

If you have an iPhone, here’s how to enable this feature:

  • Go to “Settings”
  • Tap “Cellular”
  • Tap “WiFi”
  • Switch the WiFi Calling slider to ON
  • Choose “Enable” to turn on WiFi Calling

WiFi Calling from Android

If you have an Android, here’s how to activate WiFi Calling:

  • Go to “Settings”
  • Tap “More”
  • Tap “More Settings” (under wireless and network)
  • Choose “WiFi Calling” and activate it to enable the feature
  • You may have to search for WiFi Calling if it’s located somewhere else on the Android interface.

Benefits of Enabling WiFi Calling

The benefit of using WiFi enabled calling is that you aren’t using your cell phone data plan to make or receive calls.

Home Telecom offers affordable internet rates, which means that you can save on expensive cell phone data when you’re at home and connected to your WiFi. This also allows you to make video calls without using your LTE connection.

The average WiFi call uses about 1MB of data per minute and 6 to 8 MB for a video call. Think about how much you are on the phone and how much data you could potentially save. Switch to a lower data plan on your cell phone and just have your phone automatically connect to WiFi as soon as you get home.
