HOME TELECOM Announces Winners of the 2016 Directory Art Challenge

Home Telecom is pleased to announce that the Official 2016 edition of the Moncks Corner Directory is now available.

Several Berkeley County School students, ranging from Elementary to High School, vied for the cover position in the 2016 Home Telecom Directory Art Challenge, but Westview Elementary Student, Carolina Hagwood’s “Biggins Church Ruins” wins the coveted cover. Along with a $1,000 prize to her school’s Art Department, her art will appear on the HOME Telecom 2016 Directory Cover, seen here. Her drawing spoke to the judges, particularly for its historical significance.

In addition to Carolina Hagwood winning first place, thirteen other Berkeley County School students received cash prizes totaling over $5,000 for their school’s Art Department. This is the second year the company has opened up the contest to up-and-coming student artists. “We sent out a challenge to all art departments in the school system and encouraged students to submit artwork that depicted low country scenes, historical locations, or local events,” explained Dewey Ford, Marketing Communications Coordinator at Home Telecom.

Now over 300 years old, Biggins Church was first built in 1711. The British troops used the church as a depot during the Revolutionary War and, as they retreated in 1781, the church and stores were burned. Biggins Church was rebuilt and used until the Civil War, where it sustained severe damage and was emptied of furniture. It remained neglected until around 1890 when it burned in a forest fire. In 1977, it was included in the National Register of Historic Places.

Home Telecom would like to extend their thanks to all the students who participated in this contest, and to the art teachers for their help in making this Directory Cover Art Challenge such a remarkable success.
